How to get a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP)
A Mental Health Treatment Plan is a document written by your GP that outlines your mental health goals and the types of support you might need. In Australia, this is the primary way to access Medicare-subsidised therapy sessions.
1. Book a double appointment with your GP
When booking, mention it is for a Mental Health Treatment Plan so the doctor has enough time to complete the assessment.
2. Complete the assessment
Your GP will talk to you about your symptoms and history. You might find it helpful to take one of our self-assessment quizzes beforehand to help describe how you've been feeling.
3. Receive your referral
Once the plan is in place, your GP can refer you to a registered psychologist. You are usually entitled to up to 10 Medicare-subsidised individual sessions per calendar year.
